Music DVDs

I don't like live music DVDs at all. I don't understand why there is such a large section devoted to them in most music stores... I guess people must buy them. It's basically an inconvenient way of listening to music; you have to play it through the TV and you have to watch it being performed - an experience that would not come at all close to replicating the excitement of being at the concert.

Do people watch music DVDs?

I have four, I think. One is of Hendrix live at Monterey (it's great, but mainly because I liked the music and was trying to figure out how to play it - left handed and upside down), another is a tour video of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds from the 80s (also great - black and white), the third Bob Dylan's '66 tour of England (also great), and a highly strange Beach Boys one. I watch them all, although I agree in concept music DVD's suck. But they flood the stores with them now because they are new, it will take a while before people stop buying them.

Oh, I also have Pink Floyd's The Wall, which I never watch. Although their Live at the Acropolis, or whatever it's called, is really good - they play in an empty Greek Ampitheatre.

I've got one of Pink Floyd's first live performance of Dark Side of the Moon (recorded at a concert in the 90s I think). That sounds like a really nerdy thing to own but it was a gift and I've only watched it once. I've also got 'No Direction Home' - the Martin Scorese BD doco, which is good.

I guess as silly as music DVDs are, they will never be as bad as Elvis' movie collection.

Dated a guy in college who had a bunch of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones live DVDs... he was a bassist and worshipped Victor Wooten, I think. You could get a contact high just from watching.

Victor Wooten! He makes me laugh sometimes. If you were into him, you would definitely need the DVD (or YouTube). "Worlds best bassist" according to some. I just watch a quick YouTube clip, try one of his tricks, fail, then move on. Not always music I would listen to.
