Secular music that stereotypical Christians usually like

Sometimes you meet a certain type of Christian, whose favourite bands can be immediately predicted with 100% accuracy.

They will like:

Counting Crows
I'm really unsure about this band. What is it about them? Their most famous song is "shalalalala Mr Jones and me blah blah..." (zzzzzzz) and people talk about it as though it's one of the greatest masterpieces of all time.

Ben Harper
I don't mind Ben Harper. He's pretty good. For some reason, he's really popular amongst Christians. Maybe because he dresses like a youth pastor?

Dave Matthews Band
Yuck! I think it's only Christians that listen to Dave Matthews and his nonsense. Pure mediocrity, at best.

Coldplay
We sang a version of 'Yellow' at church years ago, but the lyrics were changed to "He came across/ died on a cross for you/ and all the things that you do... you were all sinful" Who remembers that?

Maroon 5
Silly name for a band. They're a bit like Counting Crows and Dave Matthews in that no one can work out why they're even famous.

The first three = a bit vomit.

Coldplay, in my opinion, have got better. I really didn't like much of their first two albums. The hipsters like them less, but I like them more.

Maroon 5, well, whoever broke Adam Levine's heart deserves the credit for a large part of their success. Every song is about how a horrible shrew ripped out his heart, usually by cheating.

And Counting Crows... man... currently the Most Boring Band in the World?? I can't think of anyone who could come close.

I dislike all of them except Coldplay. If I'd witnessed that version of Yellow I probably would have cried, and not in a good way.

Ah the days before we knew anything about copyright. Who can forget the James song sung to the tune of Lounge act by Nirvana: "Whenever you face trials, consider it pure joy etc..." or No one's righteous sung to the tune of Confessions by the Violent Femmes?

What about U2, Der? I reckon 90% of the people at the U2 concert in Sydney were Christians. In fact, I don't know any person who is not a Christian and totally loves U2.

Please forgive us. We thought we were being ultra-revolutionaries for Jesus.

Hey Der, you'll be pleased to know that the Sydney Christian rock band New Empire's song 'Hero' has been chosen as the theme song for the Australian Navy's new recruitment drive:

Ha ha, good one Josh!

There was also 'He will build his church' to the tune of 'Wonderwall'. That was a killer!

U2 could've made this list... that's very true.

Well, I'm with you on all of them except Dave Matthews Band. They've gone a bit stale, perhaps, but they're good fun and very talented. It's not mostly Christians who listen to it, most of Dave Matthews' songs are about drugs.

Also, The Borg is completely correct about U2. If you live in Australia, are 33-40 years old and are a U2 fan, you are an evangelical Christian. Whether you know it or not.

Btw, where on earth are you singing these terrible Christian covers of secular songs? Lounge Act? Honestly? Next it'll be It is well with my soul to the tune of 2.45AM by Elliott Smith.

Hi Ben,
We used to sing those songs a few years ago at Crossroads church in Hobart. It seemed like kind of a good idea at the time, but we certainly don't sing them anymore!
